LinkedIn has always been the place where you go to for professional, career or work related material and content. With the introduction of the feed like scroll a few years back it slowly started to go from mostly professional content to somewhat casually professional content, more like a social media platform for professionals. You could now find memes and sometimes even personal stories shared by people about their private lives.
But more or less, even with the social media like noise on LinkedIn, it somehow manages to maintain a certain level of professionalism. With this new addition of a Tiktok like video feed to its app, that may begin to change sooner than later. We already see a lot of non-career related material on LinkedIn, introducing a Tiktok like feed would probably escalate this scenario a whole lot more.
The company confirmed that it is testing this new feature, a short-form video feed on its app. There will be a video button on the navigation bar that one taps on to access the vertical video feed that you can swipe through just like on the other apps. One can also like, comment and share the video. The short form videos on LinkedIn will be focused on careers and professional matters but it is not clear how this will be enforced being that anybody can share anything.
After Tiktok’s rise, short-form videos have increasingly become a popular way of disseminating information fast in an engaging way, making it short and sweet. A number of platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Netflix and most recently Spotify jumped on the short-form video bandwagon to help improve engagement rates on their platforms. Just recently Spotify announced that it was introducing longer form music videos to its platform as well.
Vertical videos have increasingly become one of the best ways for many creators to share content and have been growing in popularity over the years, it was only a matter of time before other social media like platforms such as LinkedIn try to get a piece of that pie as well.
Hopefully the videos continue to be professional on LinkedIn.
